Comprehensive Prenatal Breastfeeding Class

For people who are planning to breastfeed, and a support person, this 4 hour comprehensive and interactive class will give you all the information you need to get breastfeeding off to the best start. The basis of all our education is on using the baby’s innate instincts to facilitate breastfeeding.

Topics covered include:
– how birth & early postpartum influence breastfeeding
– breast anatomy & how milk is made
– normal newborn behavior & reflexes that facilitate breastfeeding
– positioning baby at the breast
– how to know if baby is getting enough milk
– established breastfeeding & the 4th trimester
– troubleshooting common breastfeeding challenges
– where to get breastfeeding support
– current recommendations about COVID-19 & breastfeeding

The class is led by Lee-Ann Grenier (mother of three, with over ten years experience teaching and helping mothers to breastfeed, Certified Lactation Counsellor), and facilitated by Kirsten Ziegler (CLC and mother of two).

Cost: $85 for the breastfeeding parent and support person

Breastfeeding Basics Workshop

This online, 2 hour workshop will provide an overview of breastfeeding and how to set yourself up well to reach your goals. Topics covered will include:
– what to expect in the first 3 days
– reflexes newborns use to help them breastfeed
– how to know if baby is getting enough milk
– when & where to seek assistance

Out and About with Your Breastfed Baby

This ninety minute class is essential for pregnant and new parents (and their support people) who are curious about what is involved in getting out of the house with a new baby. We will cover; breastfeeding rights and protection, and what to do if asked to leave, move or cover up while breastfeeding. Then talk about tips and tricks for feeling confident. What to pack and what to wear, to help you nurse confidently while out and about. We will provide you with a list of resources and fun things to do with your little one.

Cost is $30 for this highly interactive and fun class! Snacks will be provided.

Aspiring IBCLC –
exploring career options in the lactation field

This 5 hour, two evening seminar will give you all information you need about pursuing a career in the lactation field. We will cover the education, cost, timeline and clinical pathways required to become an IBCLC (the gold standard for lactation care) as well as alternate options for professional breastfeeding helpers. We will also discuss how Lactopia Lactation can support you in reaching those goals! There is built in time for personal goal setting and networking with others who share your passion for breastfeeding support.

The price is $55 and includes light refreshments.

Beyond the Basics: helping dyads who struggle to breastfeed

This workshop is aimed to give frontline breastfeeding supporters (doulas, midwives, nurses, chiropractors, craniosacral therapists, doctors, and breastfeeding peer supporters) an in depth, hands on opportunity to broaden their skills.

The workshop will cover the following topics:
Normal Breastfeeding and best practice.
How birth practices impact breastfeeding success.
Improving counselling skills to increase empathy and gather information.
Breastfeeding observation and assessment including; identifying tethered oral tissue (tongue and lip ties) performing cervical auscultation and suck assessment.
Common difficulties and strategies to resolve or mitigate them.
Creating an effective care plan, providing ongoing support and follow up.

Lunch and snacks will be provided, tuition is $125.

The Impact of Birth Practices on Breastfeeding

This 3 hour class is geared towards birth workers and expectant parents who are interested in increasing their knowledge and awareness of common practices in childbirth and their impact on breastfeeding. We will also cover ways to mitigate and overcome interventions to get breastfeeding off to the best possible start. This class is offered as a compliment to our comprehensive prenatal class.

The price is $75 and includes light refreshments.

When Dyads Struggle with Breastfeeding:
Identifying and resolving breastfeeding difficulties in the neonatal period

This interactive eight hour workshop aims to improve hands on skills and abilities based on the most current research and information. The workshop is appropriate for: Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Lactation Consultants, and Doulas. CERPs are available!

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Normal Breastfeeding and best practice

  • Creating an intake process to improve success
  • Breastfeeding observation and assessment; including identifying tethered oral tissue (tongue and lip ties), performing cervical auscultation and suck assessment

  • Creating an effective care plan, providing ongoing support and follow up

Price is $200. Lunch and light refreshments will be provided

From Ally to Advocate:
Supporting breastfeeding in your community

You are passionate about breastfeeding and helping others. This workshop covers everything you need to know to support the people in your community, from loved ones learning about breastfeeding, to creating change in the global community. We will cover how to help with out alienating, finding reliable information, when to seek outside help, breastfeeding law, and community organizing to create effective change.

The price is a suggested $25 donation and includes light refreshments.
